Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched India’s first indigenous Fleet Support Ship, INS Surya, at Hindustan Shipyard Limited in Visakhapatnam on 6 October 2026.
India achieved a major milestone in indigenous naval shipbuilding with the launch of Fleet Support Ship-1 (FSS-1), named INS Surya, at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also laid the keel of the fifth Fleet Support Ship (FSS-5) and inaugurated an upgraded Slipway-4 and a 300-tonne Goliath Crane at HSL.
Fleet Support Ships are designed to provide at-sea replenishment, logistics and sustained support to naval vessels operating for extended periods. They will strengthen the Indian Navy’s operational reach and endurance, particularly in the Indian Ocean Region.
The development is significant for Aatmanirbhar Bharat and defence indigenisation, as India expands its domestic capability to design and build large naval support vessels.
