India’s Gaganyaan Mission and AI Strategy Strengthen Space and Tech Leadership

The successful Gaganyaan crewed flight and the National AI Strategy underline India's growing capabilities in space and emerging technologies.
On 18 July 2024, ISRO launched the Gaganyaan crew module on a GSLV‑Mk III, marking India's first crewed orbital mission and demonstrating indigenous launch competence.
The mission is part of a broader plan to establish a low‑Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation for navigation and communication by 2026, enhancing strategic autonomy.
In parallel, the Government’s National AI Strategy, released in early 2024, outlines a roadmap for AI research, ethical guidelines and skill development, targeting a 10‑fold increase in AI‑driven enterprises by 2026.
These initiatives are expected to boost R&D spending, with the Ministry of Science & Technology allocating INR 1.5 trillion for space and AI projects in FY2025‑26.
