India’s Renewable Energy Push Aims for 500 GW Capacity by 2026

The government’s aggressive renewable energy targets and international climate commitments are reshaping India's energy landscape.
At COP28 in 2023, India pledged to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, with an interim target of 250 GW by 2026, covering solar, wind and hybrid projects.
As of March 2024, installed solar capacity reached 70 GW and wind capacity 45 GW, supported by competitive auctions and fiscal incentives such as accelerated depreciation.
The Green Energy Corridor project, approved in 2022, is progressing to integrate 30 GW of renewable power into the national grid by 2026, reducing transmission losses and enhancing grid stability.
These measures contribute to a projected decline in coal’s share of power generation from 55% in 2023 to below 40% by 2026, aligning with India’s climate mitigation goals.
