The Reserve Bank of India kept the repo rate unchanged at 6.50% to balance inflation concerns with growth support.
On September 6, 2024, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that the repo rate would remain at 6.50% for the fourth consecutive meeting, citing a need to contain inflationary pressures while sustaining economic recovery.
The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) noted that headline inflation had eased to 4.7% in August, marginally above the 4% medium‑term target, and that global commodity price volatility required a cautious stance.
Despite the unchanged rate, the RBI signalled a possible rate cut in the next quarter if inflation continues to trend downwards, emphasizing its commitment to a flexible inflation targeting framework.
